| Description |
English: A so-called Khao kaeng (Thai script: ข้าวแกง) or Rat khao (Thai script: ราดข้าว) restaurant. These simple eateries can be found all over Thailand. Some are only open for breakfast and lunch, some are open for dinner time, and some open up at night. Khao kaeng, meaning "rice and sauce", or Rat khao, meaning "poured over rice", describes the way how the food there is often served: a dish is served together with rice on one plate. Many of the dishes have been made earlier that day and are therefore eaten lukewarm or even cold. Some of these places, like the one of the photo, also prepare simple dishes on order such as the fried egg salad (yam khai dao) shown on this photo. This meal of rice, egg salad and stir-fried Chinese broccoli with pork cost 40 baht altogether: around 1 Euro/1.30US$. |
