Title
Key: copper alloy
Description
English: An unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is of cast copper alloy, and is in the form of a square-sectioned peg, with an open, round head. The shank is decorated with saltires and simple linear ornament, remeniscent of Roman period designs, but the form has no close parallels in a Romano-British context. It is possible that the object may be some sort of peg, and that a cord or similar passed through it head, but there is little evidence for wear in this area. An alternative is that it is part of the mechanism for a postmedieval clock. However, in the absence of close parallels, function will have to remain speculative.
