Description
English: c. 794-796AD. Aethelheard (793-805AD) Archbishop of Canterbury with Offa as overlord. Hammered silver, broad penny. Length 19.8mm, Width 19.6mm, Thickness 1.0mm, Diameter 19.8mm, Weight 1.43g. Second issue with Offa as overlord. Obverse: Aethelheard Arcepi in three lines. Inscription: AEDILHEARD ARCEPI Reverse: Offa Rex in and between two lunettes with M above. Inscription: OFFA REX M. Full flan coin with very little wear, grey tarnished surface but silver on high spots. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2009, page 94 No. 885 and English Hammered coinage Vol. I, J.J. North, Spink 1991 reprint 2006, page 77 No. 229.

This coin is a new variety, struck from unrecorded dies.
