Even yet there is nounanimity of opinion. Some maintain that the use of oil on thefloor is necessary to keep down the dust, others that the mere factthat the oil does keep down the dust makes it dangerous to usein classrooms, as the dust and dirt stays in the room instead ofbeing removed by proper sweeping and washing. Changing from the old oak floors to maple has made a de-cided improvement in these conditions. Increased janitorial ser-vice also has permitted a better care of the floors than formerly. iThirteen schools, 19.5 per cent of the permanent buildings, fail to come up to thestandard for boys toilet stalls; twenty, 30 per cent, are deficient in urinal stalls, andeighteen, 27 per cent, fail to provide sufficient number of toilet stalls for girls. u 5 V LIGHTING IN CLASSROOMS A condition affecting through life the vision and health ofthe pupils is that of adequate lighting in classrooms. Factorsin the lighting problem include location of windows—whetherthe light comes from the left or other direction, arrangementof windows, height of the window from the floor and its dis-tance from the ceiling. The consensus today demands that in rooms used for reg-ular classroom work, light should come wholly from the left,that the glass area should be not less than 20 per cent of the floorarea, that the mullions between the windows, in order not tocast shadows, should be as thin as possible, that the windowsshould reach as near the ceiling as possible in order that pupils onthe farther side of the room may get proper light. All this is merely a beginning. The expense up to this timeis value or waste, depending upon the kind and arrangement ofwindow shade which is installed.
