Title
English: Katzenjammer Castle, Seattle's second City Hall, 1909
Description
English: In 1890, Seattle's population stood at around 40,000. By 1909, it had grown to over 200,000. Seattle's city government grew along with the city, and this was reflected in the additions to its City Hall. By 1909, the building had had so many changes and additions that residents called it the Katzenjammer Castle, after some of the crazy buildings in a popular cartoon strip of the day.

This 1909 photo shows the Third Avenue facade of the Seattle City Hall, with its many seemingly haphazard additions. The doors are open to the fire station (center right, below the fan molding). That year, most of the city offices moved to the new Public Safety Building.
