Description Obtained by recommendation of Jim Scott, News Services, University of Colorado 9/27/2005 cunews@colorado.edu - This image was referenced in a news release (http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2005/358.html) - CU-Boulder Researchers Chart Katrina's Growth In Gulf Of Mexico - The image shows Hurricane Katrina's maximum sustained windspeed after it crossed Florida and rode the warm Loop Current and Eddy Vortex up towards Louisiana. Sea surface height is a proxy for water temperature, as warmer water is less dense and therefore has a higher surface. Note that a hurricane will leave a "cool" trail behind it.
