Summary[edit]

Description

English: Barrage-Tufa deposits in the side valley Donntal of river Lenninger Lauter at Gutenberg (Lenningen). This valley and a larger area around Gutenberg are the Naturschutzgebiet "Oberes Lenninger Tal mit Seitentälern”.

This variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals in water bodies retains the water in small steps and dams. The sticky, muddy limestone is stabilized, when twigs, plants, leaves or other small remains are involved.

Countless rivulets in the Swabian Alb and the Franconian Jura with such barrages may be observed. Yet only a few have developed such impressive forms.
