「はふや」は江戸時代から続く箱根宿最大の旅籠で、唯一茅葺屋根を持つ宿だった。明治に入ってからも存続し、川田本陣跡地も買い取って敷地を拡大し、外国人客相手に賑わった。この頃の宿主は高瀬四郎左右衛門で、その後何人か所有者が変わったのち、1922年に宮ノ下の富士屋ホテルが野村洋三(古美術商・ホテルニューグランド会長)から買い取り、箱根ホテルとした。
