Kennst du die Nacht, die auf die Erde sinkt

Bei hohlem Wind und scheuem Regenfall,
Die Nacht, in der kein Stern am Himmel blinkt,
Kein Aug durchdringt des Nebels dichten Wall?
So finster diese Nacht, sie hat doch einen Morgen
O lege dich zur Ruhe und sei ohne Sorgen!

Kennst du die Nacht, die auf das Leben sinkt,
Wenn dich der Tod aufs letzte Lager streckt
Und nah der Ruf der Ewigkeit erklingt,
Daß dir der Puls in allen Adern schreckt?
So finster diese Nacht, sie hat doch einen Morgen
O lege dich zur Ruhe und sei ohne Sorgen!

Kennst du die Nacht, die auf den Geist dir sinkt,
Daß er vergebens um Erlösung schreit,
Die schlangengleich sich ums Gedächtniß schlingt
Und tausend Teufel ins Gehirn dir speit?
