Title
KENT-CE6AE0: medieval chape
Description
English: A late Medieval - early Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) incomplete object possibly a girdle terminal or a dagger chape dating late 15th - early 16th century. The object is triangular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The chape as been cast in one piece with a rectangular central void. The chap narrows from an irregular old break at the top end until it terminates in a globular knop. Each edge is decorated with two semicircular protuberances positioned close to the knop. There is similar protrubernce on the front face that has been bent out of shape. There is a corresponding irregular circular hole on the reverse face, presumably for the attachment of fabric. There is some damage around the open end and the final section is missing.

There is incised decoration on both surfaces; on the front surface there are four parallel lines of cross hatching running down the length of the face. One the reverse there is a line of cross hatching one either side with diamond shapes of the same cross hatching in the center.

The chape is 27.3mm long, 15.3mm wide, 7.9mm thick and weighs 6.48 grams.

There is a very similar example on the data base: LON-DB63E4. IN the record Kate Sumnall writes: "A comparable example, with tear decoration, appears in TAR 2004 No. 223 and another example has been recorded on the database LON-8809F7. LON-8809F7 has been identified by James Robinson, Curator of the Medieval Collections, the British Museum, as a girdle terminal. Ian Smith, Chairman of the Mudlarks, suggested this object is a dagger chape".
