Title
KENT-918F8E: Early Medieval mount
Description
English: An Early Medieval copper alloy cruciform mount of probably 6th to 10th century date. The cruiciform if formed of four projections emanating from a raised convex boss in the center. The projections all have concave sides and have rounded terminals. East terminal has been perforated with an irregular circular rivet hole, two of which have been broken by an old break. One perforations retains an iron rivet and there are signs of iron staining on the other perforations. The central boss is decorated with four small drilled circular peroforations. The reverse of the boss is concave and is filled with iron corrosion products possibly suggesting that that mount was once attached to an iron object.

The mount is 19.5mm long, 21.3mm wide, 4.5mm thick and weighs 3.01 grams.

A mount of a similar shape with rivet holes in the protrusion can be seen on the database as dated to the 6th century AD, DENO-A99AB3 and BH-9316D2 both of which are copper alloy but are more highly decorated. However, NMS-F6B515 which has a similar boss to this example has been dated to the late Early Medieval period, the10th to 11th century. This mount has therefore been given a general Early Medieval date.

An extremely similar mount was found along side this one and has been recorded on the database as KENT-91E2BD.
