It happened that wherewe stood was about the densest of dense jungle; wewere literally encircled with twining rotan, bushesand cane and thorn vines. I was fearful ofmoving, but move we must in order to approachthe buffalo. I took the jungle knife away fromWan and gave him my gun, for I wanted to besure no noise was made in cutting our path. SoonI discarded the jungle knife and drew the smallerone I always carry in my belt for eating and gen-eral utility. We made our way a few feet at atime, bending low in the effort to get a sight aheadand locate the buffalo which we could now plainlyhear moving. It seemed not over ten or fifteenyards off. The suspense was intense. The mostagonizing thoughts chased through my head—thatWan would drag my rifle, that I would drop myknife, or stumble, or something would happen toscare off our quarry, or that I might sight it run-
