  • Dansk: Maleriet er muligvis identisk med et maleri, som Julius Paulsen udstillede på Charlottenborg i 1886 med titlen "Aftenbillede" (kat. 312). På Raadhusudstillingen i 1901 udstillede kunstneren flere malerier fra 1886 med titler som "Sommereftermiddag. Tidsvilde" (kat. 1404), "Solnedgang. Tidsvilde" (kat. 1406) og "Sommernat" (kat. 1409). Johan Hansen erhvervede senere det sidstnævnte ("Sommernat", 54,2 x 63 cm; jf. Fortegnelse over Generalkonsul Johan Hansens Samling af Dansk Kunst. København [1918] kat. 551; & Fortegnelse ... [1931], kat. 1402). Det pågældende maleri er næppe identisk med maleriet på Charlottenborg-udstillingen i 1886, idet kunstneren selv har givet oplysninger til Raadhusudstillingens katalog, der blev redigeret af kunstnerens gode ven, Karl Madsen, der også arrangerede udstillingen. Paulsen ville i givet fald have kunnet korrigere den forkerte titel. Nationalmuseum, Stockolm ejer et beslægtet maleri med titlen "Aften" fra 1887 (55 x 66 cm). Også i slutningen af 1880'erne og i 1890'erne udførte Paulsen flere tusmørkebilleder (jf. Wolsgaard Iversen, 2002, kat. 6 ("Sommernat. Høsterkøb", 1888), kat. 12 ("Solnedgang", 1893)). Uanset om nærværende maleri er identisk med aftenbilledet, som han udstillede i 1886, er det overvejende sandsynligt, at kunstneren har givet det en tilsvarende titel. Det er et af de tidligste af denne type aften- og nattebilleder, og det er derved med til at indvarsle 1890'ernes danske stemningsmaleri. Maleriet er sandsynligvis malet på kunstnerens rejse til Tyskland i 1886.
