The portrait shows Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) in profile to the right with a lowered gaze, drawn by Ernst Benedikt Kietz (1815-1892) in Paris in 1851. Kietz, the son of a senior postal secretary and a former actress, graduated from 1831 to 1838 he studied at the art academy in Dresden. During this time he took part in several Dresden Academy exhibitions and presented portraits of Dresden society. In 1838, Kietz continued his artistic training in Paris, where he was accepted into the workshop of Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). During his stay in Paris he developed a close friendship with Richard Wagner. Between 1841 and 1857, Kietz took part in several exhibitions at the Paris Salon. His travels took him to Malta, Constantinople, Athens and Rome before he settled in Épernay from around 1858. He returned to Germany in 1870 and during the Franco-Prussian War he worked as a drawing teacher for the daughters of Frederick VIII of Schleswig-Holstein, including the future Empress Auguste Viktoria, at Primkenau Castle in Silesia. After his return to Dresden, he continued his artistic activity and acted as a drawing teacher for Princess Mathilde of Saxony. – Slightly brown and foxed. Decorative."

Das Porträt zeigt Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) im Profil nach rechts mit gesenktem Blick, gezeichnet von Ernst Benedikt Kietz (1815-1892) in Paris im Jahre 1851. Kietz, der Sohn eines Oberpostsekretärs und einer ehemaligen Schauspielerin, absolvierte von 1831 bis 1838 sein Studium an der Kunstakademie in Dresden. Während dieser Zeit nahm er an einigen Dresdner Akademie-Ausstellungen teil und präsentierte dabei Porträts der Dresdner Gesellschaft. Im Jahr 1838 setzte Kietz seine künstlerische Ausbildung in Paris fort, wo er in die Werkstatt von Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) aufgenommen wurde. Während seines Pariser Aufenthalts entwickelte er eine enge Freundschaft mit Richard Wagner. In den Jahren von 1841 bis 1857 beteiligte sich Kietz an mehreren Ausstellungen des Pariser Salons. Seine Reisen führten ihn nach Malta, Konstantinopel, Athen und Rom, bevor er sich ab etwa 1858 in Épernay niederließ.
