. The format of the little panel portrait of thePrince of Wales evoked in the press the obviouslyinvited reference to Clouet. The ready writer cannotbave looked at so much as a single pearl in the neck-lace of one of Clouets princesses. To judge fairly of an artist, however, we mustfollow him on to his own ground. In his portrait ofbis grandfather, at the same exhibition, it wasquite possible to see Lepage at his best as a work-manlike and photographic copyist of a figure inrepose. It was at the same time possible to turnfrom this picture straight to Manets fifre, and to hisbon bock, and thus to measure the gulf that separatesa meritorious workman from an inspired executantof the first rank. No useful end can be gained byobscuring this fact, and if, in league with the moderngigantic conspiracy of toleration, we are to speakof L.i^tien-Lepage as a master, what terms are leftus for Keene and Millet, for Whistler and Degas ?
