ers-general Sfciiartand Doyles brigades,with the dismounted cavalry, moved in the rearof lord Cavans brigade, near the lake. The object was, to turn the enemys right. As we advanced, the French commenced froma numerous, and admirably well served flyingartillery, a very destructive lire upon us ; which,oifilacUng the depths of our columns, and rico-chef ting from division to division, caused greathavoc in our ranks. The columns were imme*diately, and witli the greatest precision, deployedinto line, excepting the reserve, which continuedin column the whole day near the sea, and briga-dier-general Doyles brigade. At this moinent, the enemy, in expectation oftaking advantage of this change of disposition,came down from the heights to attack us. TheFrench were then obliged to retreat, havingreceived a well timed volley as they w^heeledabout, w^hich brought great numbers of them to the ground. Their attack on other parts of the line wasattended with no better success, being repulsed inevery quarter. The ninety-second, opposed to the sixty-first demibrigade, and under a heavyfire from two field pieces, loaded with grapeshot, advanced unshaken to their very mouths^forcing the enemy, by a precise and well conti-nued fire of musquetry, to abandon them. Our motions were slow, we being often obligedto halt for the artillery ; which, not being drawnby horses, but by men, was dragged with greatdifficulty and labour through the heavy sands.During these intervals, the enemy, whom weforced every where to give way, regularly rallied,and, bringing up their flying artillery, galled usbitterly.
