e inhabitants raise the water,and overflow the lands. The numerous villages on both banks, gene-rally built opposite each other, have at a distancea very pretty appearance ; and the minarets of themosques, with which they all abound, consider-ably improve the prospect, from their light andairy structure. But as you approach nearer, thebeauty gradually disappears; and when youarrive opposite to them, they offer nothing to theview but an assemblage of miserable half ruinedhouses. The Nile, which was now nearly at its height^was extremely rapid, and with light winds it wasalmost impossible to stem the current. Ourcrew, a surprisingly active set of Arabs, were thep-reater part of this day up to their chins in thewater, dragging the boat along, and assisting ourprogress. Their agility and expertness in swim-ming is really astonishing, and from the delightthey take in the water, they might almost beconsidered as amphibious.
