er, while the tube was being shifted and the pointermoved up and down until the observer was certain thatthese shadows traveled together and an equal distance.This necessitated very careful observation and consumedmany minutes, and the possibilities of error were greatlyincreased when the part in which the foreign body waslocated happened to be thick and broad, so that the shadowof the foreign body was at some distance—that distancemay be as much as twelve inches—away from that of thepointer. These difficulties are readily overcome by the metal barsrunning the full length of the base plate (the distinctivefeature of this localizer). The shadows that these barscast on the fluorescent screen can be seen by the observerwhether the screen lies over the square opening in the baseplate or over any other portion of it, and by their aid thetravel of the shadows of the foreign body and of the pointercaused by the same shifting of the X-ray tube is maderapidly, accurately and independently.
