It was surmised that because of its con-formation the cause of pressure was due to hydrostaticforces. The thought immediately centered on the bladder.In one case catheterization was followed by the completedisappearance of a tumor mass which was quite palpablethrough the abdomen. Thirty-nine ounces of residual urinewere obtained. Chemically this urine showed no decom-position. It was known that a large prostate was present, but thesupposed abdominal tumor (distended bladder) was theperplexing problem for diagnosis. Removal of the pros-tate gave complete relief. The other case presented great difficulty in catheteriza-tion—only a few drops of urine passing at a time, no satis-factory catheterization was possible. Operation revealeda mucous flap near the urethral orifice in the bladder whichacted as a valve, interfering with urinary evacuation. 348 THE JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY
