Tube No. 4. Made by the Algemeine Electricitats Gesellschaft in 1895 andbrought to this country in 1896. This is the first tube to take on the outwardform of the modern gas tube. 432 THE JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY THE USE OF THE PLATE SHIELD AS A CHECKIN DARK ROOM WORK The plate shield consists of a rectangular sheet of leadfrom 1-16 to 1-8 of an inch thick, 8% inches wide by lO1/^inches long, with a circular hole cut in the center 7 inchesin diameter. This size shield is intended to be used with8x10 plates and the advantage of having it % inch largerwill be at once apparent when using it with plates loaded ineither envelopes or cassettes. The purpose of the shield isto provide a simple, easy and frequent check upon the con-dition of the plates and developing and fixing solutionsthat are being used.
