AS the old rule-of-thumb yacht modeling (under which theHerreshofT reputation was made) has been superceded byscientific drafting, and as medical education has outgrownreading with a preceptor, so is the graded course of instruction nowbeing called for in the education of head specialists. Following the New York Ophthalmic Hospital—at an interval ofthirty years—Oxfords ophthalmological degree has come at thepsychological moment and gets credit for leading the movement whichthe University of Colorado has just taken up. Both of these institu-tions are open to the criticism that their Doctor of Ophthalmologyrepresents an incomplete course (as we have before remarked) inthat they pronounce the holder a compjournalofophthal1919amer
