Summary[edit]

Description
English: Jointing in the Sgurr Pitchstone The steep alignment of columnar jointing and the deeply eroded basalt lava flows beneath An Sgurr indicate that the pitchstone flowed into an existing valley. Although the upper and lower face of the cliff shows a different jointing pattern, it is held that the pitchstone was emplaced in a single flow. Pitchstone is a term for a dominantly-glassy, quickly-cooled lava that contains a significant proportion of earlier crystals. If it was all-glass it would be called obsidian.
