Summary[edit]

Description
English: John Snow pub sign. The pub is named in honour of a celebrated piece of medical detective work by Dr John Snow (1813-1858). A physician and anaesthetist, he independently developed the idea of water-borne disease, as opposed to the contemporary theory of pathogenic 'miasma'. His ideas were not accepted until he was able to prove, by mapping the occurrence of cholera cases with water sources in Soho, that the epicentre of the outbreak was around a pump located here in Broad Street (later renamed Broadwick Street). The clinching evidence was the fact that two women who lived in Hampstead but obtained their water from this pump, also fell victim to the disease.
