Description |
English: President Lincoln appointed John J. McGilvra United States Attorney for Washington Territory. In 1864, McGilvra and his family settled near Lake Washington, in today's Madison Park district. They called their home Laurel Shade. At his own expense, McGilvra built a road from the farm to Seattle, along the route which became Madison Street. This stereographic photo shows John McGilvra's property, Laurel Shade, in 1864. A dirt road leads to the farm through logged off land. Stereographs have two images which combine to make a single three-dimensional image when viewed through the lenses of a stereoscope. Original copy negative. Original stereo photograph: 1864. Copied after 1902 by Webster & Stevens
Seattle Public Library has several copies of what appears to be one of these two photos, and they date them as 1870, which may be more likely. |
