DescriptionJohn Bingham Esquire.jpg |
English: Memorial to John Bingham Esquire in Southwark Cathedral. According to the London Metropolitan Archives, the will of John Bingham, gentleman, of St Saviour, contains the following information:
Date written: 1624 June 12, written ‘with my owne hand’. Date proved: 1625 October 5. Family members named: Ann his now wife, to have the ‘lillypot’, perhaps a messuage, that the testator bought from his uncle Taylor. Joseph and William Smith, sons of his sister Smith, to each have a tenement in Chain (Cheyne) Gate, now occupied by Wilson the baker and Allen the cooper. Deborah and Elizabeth Smith, daughters of his sister Smith. Richard Bingham, underage son of his cousin Philip Bingham. Mary Flood his sister. His cousin Bingham of Axbryde (Axbridge?). His sister Garat's two daughters. Edward Bromfield his brother, and his wife. Anthony Carlton his brother, and his wife. Margaret Bromfeild his goddaughter. William Bingham his brother. Others named: Richard Benchkyne and his children. His unnamed servants. Executor: Ann his wife. Overseers: Edward Bromfeild and Anthony Carleton, his brothers. Witnesses: none recorded. Testator is in good health. He asks to be buried in St Saviour church, in the vault where his first wife was buried. Testator has an acre of ground in St George's Fields with a windmill upon it; income from the rent of this property is to be given to the poor of St Saviour, and of St Martin in the Fields ‘where I was borne’. Bequests also to the St Saviour almshouse and to the poor of the parishes of St Olave, St George, and St Thomas; also to St Thomas Hospital, ‘whereof I am a Governour’. Bequests also to the Company of Sadlers, and to the prisoners in the Kings Bench and Marshalsea prisons and the Newgate Compter. Many of these bequests are to be paid out of ‘such money as the kinge oweth mee’. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/116200707/john-bingham) |
