Summary[edit]

Description
English: Jean Alfred Desbrosses (French, 1835-1906), oil on canvas, 14" x 22", signed lower left. This is one of a series of paintings by Desbrosses representing views of the ruins of the Palais d'Orsay. The Court of Auditors was housed there until 1871, when the Palace was burned down during the events of the Paris Commune. These ruins occupied the Parisian landscape for nearly 25 years; Camille Flammarion called it "the virgin forest of the Court of Auditors" because spontaneous vegetation quickly flourished there, as captured by Desbrosses's images. A number of paintings from this series are displayed on the second floor of the Palais Cambon in Paris.[1]
