English: Caption: The runners whipping, howl and trot with incredible agility, beside our playful ponies.
Excerpt rom the book: The bells of eight ponies resound in front of the veranda, the whips crack, and we set off at full gallop. Besides the postilion, two Malay (actually Javanese) runners whipping, screaming incessantly, trotting take turns next to the horses with incredible agility. {See the engraving p. 317.} When Pattelage is launched belly down, they each climb on one of the back seat steps and just spur the ponies of the bursts of their shrill voices; as soon as walking tends to slow down, they descend, rush, and roll blows the poor little animals. Their costume consists of a colored belt tied at the waist, and a large bowler hat, scarlet and gold: they are so light, so robust, so well muscled and so full of passion that they make me happy. Leur costume se compose d’une ceinture de couleur nouée aux reins, et d’un grand chapeau cloche à melon, écarlate et doré : ils sont si lestes, si robustes, si bien musclés et si pleins de fougue, qu’ils font ma joie. |
