Summary[edit]

Description

Japantown, in the Western Addition, has been the focus point of San Francisco's ethnic Japanese population since the 1906 earthquake.

Once upon a time, California's burgeoning Japanese immigrant population added up to dozens of Japantowns throughout the state, but after Japanese immigration was restricted by the 1907 Gentlemen's Agreement and banned by the Immigration Act of 1924, and after the forced internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, few Japanese-Americans maintain active links with Japan today, and only three Japantowns remain nationwide, San Francisco's being the largest. Only in 1952 were Japanese immigrants allowed to naturalize in the US, and only in 1965 was US immigration fully re-opened to the Japanese, but by then Japan was affluent enough that few people felt a need to move to the US.

Here, Post Street is marked in Japanese. Across the street can be seen New Minny's Restaurant, which used to actually be a Denny's location, complete with the name "Denny's" written in Japanese katakana (デニ—ズ).
