I trudgedback, sometimes overtaken on the roadby darkness, tired perhaps, but happy.At home, there were three youngerbrothers, and as soon as I reached homefrom school the youngest baby would bestrapped on my back while I went out toplay. Then when dusk came, I wascalled in to help my mother with prepara-tions for the evening meal and the dailyevening worship, for my family werevery devout, and running all around oneroom of the house was a high shelf, onwhich stood the shrines of the manygods we worshipped. Most importantof all was the family god, Uji-gami, butflanking him were many others—Kwannon, goddess of mercy; InariSama, the fox god; Jizo Sama, the chil-drens god, and so on. Before eachshrine every night a little lamp must belighted, and at each meal, before any-one has tasted the food, some of thenewly-cooked rice must be set before thegods. It was my duty to help with this,and then to stand with the others beforethe gods, and, clapping my hands to-gether, repeat the prayers.
