斎藤家の出自 美濃国（みののくに）の斎藤家は、平安時代前期の武将「藤原利仁」（ふじわらのとしひと）の子「藤原叙用」（ふじわらののぶもち）を祖とする「藤原北家利仁流斎藤家」の後裔（こうえい）「越前斎藤家」の庶流（しょりゅう：宗家または本家から別れた一族のこと）・河合系斎藤の赤塚家が、国司の代官である美濃国目代として越前国（えちぜんのくに：現在の福井県嶺北地方・敦賀市）から移り住んだのが始まりだと言われています。

斎藤家は南北朝から室町時代にかけて美濃国守護土岐家に従属し、美濃国司に代わって国政にあたり美濃国に勢力を植え付けました。戦国時代に入ると、「長井規秀」（ながいのりひで：のちの斎藤道三）が斎藤家の家督を継ぎ、下剋上を果たします。

長井新左衛門尉（ながいしんざえもんのじょう）と斎藤道三の父子は、巧みな戦略で他家を侵略してのし上がり、斎藤家の最盛期をつくりました。宿敵と和睦したり、自分を評価してくれた人物を裏切ったりと、何かと戦略的な動きで活躍。東海の歴史の中で決して外すことのできない重要な一族となりました。
