| Description |
The James River runs from the Appalachian Mountains in western Virginia to the Chesapeake Bay in eastern Virginia. The James is one of the old tobacco plantation rivers, its banks were lined with the plantations of the white farmers who brought Virginia to prominence during the colonial days and early years of independence. The Chesapeake, while not a terribly significant bay in the world, has a lot of local lore - it is where the first colonists (those who settled Jamestown) landed in America. Growing up in a Virginia family the James River and Chesapeake Bay have always been a part of my family's lore - the significance of the Chesapeake in American history, the significant of the James to the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is a terribly mundane, insignificant bridge but there's a lot of good "baggage" associated with its namesake, the James River. |
