[edit]Another Case of the Bad Effects of Cocaine. New York Times, February 6. Dr. James L. Farley, a well-known elocutionist of Brooklyn and Surgeon of the Fourteenth Regiment, became insane on Wednesday last, and was taken to the Flat-bush Asylum. His case was pronounced hooded., and he was placed in the incurable wand Dr. Farley has for some time been suilerlug from brain trouble but his friends thought it was caused by too much devotion to literary work. He had been treating himself for nervousness with hypodermic injections of cocaine, but the drug soon 1.1.1110,1 to relieve his sufferings. The first knowledge of any serious trouble came to his friends a few weeks ago, when the doctor called at the house of a friend where he was to read in the evening at an early hour in the morning. He smilingly informed his host that he wanted to be on time. He had an engagement to give a series of Friday afternoon readings before the Young Men'• Christian association beginning yesterday. Dr. Farley served in the Fourteenth regiment dui in.; the war, his appointment its assistant Burg. on being dated April 19, 18131, He was made surgeon on January 24, 1.412, and Mae/Imlay discharged on June 10, 1863. In the following year ho went again to the trout as surgeon of his old regiment, and at the close of the struggle was brevetted a lieutenant-colonel of volunteers for heroic conduct. Be has been surgeon of the Fourteenth ever since, with the rank of major. He is about 50 years of age and is a son of the Rev. Dr. Farley, who was for many years pastor if the Church of Our Saviour, on Clinton street.
