Summary[edit]

Description

Photo of the locomotive William Crooks with Great Northern Railway personnel. Second from left is Albion B. Smith, who restored the locomotive after an 1868 fire. Smith became the locomotive's engineer after the restoration. It was Smith who spoke to Great Northern owner James J. Hill when the William Crooks was to be sent to scrap; Hill stopped the plan and proclaimed the old locomotive his personal engine. Hill stands to the right of Albion Smith.[1]

The occasion is probably the last active duty for the locomotive, as this was for Hill's 70th birthday in 1908. The locomotive was originally a wood burner-this can be seen by the cords in the tender; it was later converted to burning coal.
