35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Felidae; Genus: Panthera; Genus species: Panthera onca. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 110-185 cm; Height: 68-76 cm; Weight: 57-138 kg; Identification: The jaguar has a yellowish-brown coloration that can vary from white to black. It also has black spots on its belly that become rosettes on the back. The tail tip, lower jaw, and outer surface of the ears are black; Habitat: Tropical forests, swamps, open country, deserts, savannas; Diet: Carnivore: tapirs, peccaries, capybaras, caimans, turtles, birds, fish; Reproduction: Males usually mate with several females. Dens are located in thick vegetation, rocks, or holes in a river bank. A gestation period of 93-110 days produces a litter of 1-4 cubs; Social Structure: Jaguars are solitary cats; Behavior: Males are usually territorial. Jaguars can often be seen climbing trees or swimming; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: This is the largest cat found in South America.
