Description
Mughal India, Allahabad. The carving represents a female of the species Kachuga Dhongaka, native to the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. The naturalistic rendering of the terrapin, with its head slightly off-centre, is in keeping with Prince Selim's, the future Emperor Jahangir, liking for realism and his interest in Indian wildlife.
