Description
English: Supplement page added in December 1944 to J.A.N. No. 1 UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA, a publication prepared by the Military Intelligence Service and the Division of Naval Intelligence of the US War Departement as a recognition field manual for the American fighting forces during World War II:
  • SHOULDER BOARDS AND SLEEVE INSIGNIA; LINE OFFICERS
  • RN (ROYAL NAVY) Made up of professional naval personnel and former pro- fessionals recalled to active duty. Higher ranks, which exist only for Royal Navy, are shown on page at left.
  • RNR (ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE) Composed chiefly of men who in private life were merchant marine officers or were other- wise closely connected with maritime affairs.
  • RNVR (ROYAL NAVAL VOLUNTEER RESERVE) Composed of men of varying professional backgrounds.
The cumulative military manual was a Joint Army and Navy ("JAN") publication illustrating uniforms and insignia of the navies, armies and air forces of several countries. The collection of plates was published as a US Government unclassified public document 1943-44 in the format of a pocket-sized loose-leaf string-tied binder allowing for later additional pages and corrections. Today the manual is in the public domain without any known copyright restrictions.
