They come from Africa, Sicily, or the French coast. The travellers ondeck gaze up curiously at the rock of Tiberius ; but the sailors look at it mistrustfully,for they know that in foul weather it is dangerous, and has often been fatal to shipping. Bright sunlight illumines all the landscape, and Vesuvius, and the fine lines of thedistant Apennine, are clearly relieved against the azure background.
