Notes Important notice: The title given is "Berber Woman," but this is a ciociaro costume, a traditional peasant costume of Italy. In this case she is partially covered by a "cialone," a striped cloak used mainly by Ciocian women to protect themselves from the cold (for a specific mention of the "cialone": Michele Santulli, Il costume ciociaro: nell'arte europea del 1800, Arpino 2009, p.94, tav. VII). In addition to this we notice in the clothing the classic apron, and the very famous ciocie, the latter removing any trace of doubt as to what the woman might have worn. Niketto sr. (talk)
