Summary[edit]

Description
English: A band of Italian revolutionaries fighting in the Argentine army during the Paraguayan War. These men, comrades of Garibaldi, fled Italy to South America and after many adventures are photographed at Tuyu-Cué in the wetlands of southern Paraguay. Their colonel is Pipo Giribone (seated, right foreground). This photograph must have been taken before early 1868, when Giribone was killed in a Paraguayan ambush. The musicians (white headger) may have doubled as fighting men and certainly had the task of removing the wounded from battlefields.
