whole is stillwrapped in mystery, many of the islands having neverbeen visited by a European. All the maps availableare very unsatisfactory, and make no attempt to giveaccurate geographical details. We proceeded to Bol, which was formerly a Frenchstation (illus. 68, 69), but finding it quite deserted, welanded on the island of Daldal, which is separated fromBol by a water channel about 200 yards wide. We foundsome rare zoological specimens in Daldal, and rewardedthe natives who brought them with mirrors and knives. We passed many small islands, and at sunset weanchored at Melea, where we pitched our tents. Afternightfall we noticed a curious phenomenon : the wholeshore of the island was apparently covered with sparks.These were in reality glow-worms crawling in thousandson the ground. During the whole of our stay in the islands theweather was fine and warm, but the night before weleft a violent wind arose and threatened to overturnour tents. We set off at 10.30 the following morning,

LAKE TCHAD 69 though the weather looked very threatening, and therewere white horses on the lake. At about two oclock welanded at an uninhabited island in order to procurewood for fuel, and as a thick fog came on, we wereobliged to encamp and wait for an improvement inthe weather. The thermometer registered 67° F. inthe morning, and 81° F. in the evening. The nextday a strong wind was blowing, which did not affectus as long as we were under the lee of the islands, butas soon as we reached the open water, the waves be-came so violent that the captain decided to anchoronce more. The moon rose late, and we spent thenight on board. During the evening we made asuccessful trip in a collapsible boat, and securedsome new species of birds. The next morning wecontinued our journey, and although our little vesselpitched and rolled in the heavy seas, by 10 oclock wehad once more safely reached the mouth of the Shari.
