Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Iria (Bibite) Ceremony

Iria is a ceremony celebrated by the Ijaw ethnic group in Rivers State, Nigeria. It is a significant cultural event that marks the transition of a girl into womanhood within the Ibani Ijaw community.

When The Egerebite Rites has been concluded, The Iriabo goes to church on Sunday for her Thanksgiving. After the service, the Iriabo head tie would be removed and replaced with the Iria DaSú (crown) and then lifted high by able bodied men. She would be carried from the Church to the Monument square, round her Husband or Father’s compound then finally lowered in front of the Iria ikina where her Husband or Father would serve the men a bottle of dry gin. She will then go in and change into the Bibite Cloth such as the Intorica George wrapper and the lili-inji. At this point, only the women who has gone through the Iria process would come out and join her in the Siri. The Bibite stage holds the highest level of honor and respect within the Ijaw-Ibani clans of Opobo and Bonny, and it receives special attention and reverence.
