Sharp orders rang out, theranks of the constabulary broke, men darted hither andthither, each intent on his duty, and within five minutes theserious business of reducing the stronghold began. Thistime something had to give way, and obviously it would notbe the constabulary. Some of them ran forward with a longladder, which was flung with a crash against the eaves. Menran up the rungs, shielding their faces as best they couldfrom the deadly shower of water and tar and lime, and,clinging to the ladder desperately, brandished iron rodswound with barbed wire over the apertures in the roof andwall.
