Summary[edit]

The American flag flies at half mast from the stern of the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) as the ship returns to home port following an explosion which killed 47 crew members. The explosion occurred inthe No. 2 16-inch gun turret as the Iowa was conducting routine gunnery exercises approximately 300 miles northeast of Puerto Rico on April 19th. (Released to Public) Location: NAVAL AIR STATION, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA (VA) UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)
