English: The many floors of one of Bangkok's many mega shopping malls full of desirable branded goods at seemingly low prices, except if you ask yourself if you really need them. The city's malls seem to have replaced temples as the number 1 repeat must-visit destination for Thais and tourists alike. Mirroring developments in European cities, what Noam Chomsky terms "individual consumption" has become the highest goal in life for many people in Bangkok. Chomsky's comments on consumerism, though now several decades old, are more relevant than ever -
"This consumerism is based on the fact that we are a society dominated by business interests. There is a massive propaganda for everyone to consume. Consumption is good for profits and consumption is good for the political establishment. Consumption distracts people. You cannot control your population by force, but it can be distracted by consumption." |
