Mary Halvorson Trio Nederlands: Mary Halvorson is als gitariste, componiste én improvisator een prima inter pares. Ze houdt niet van structuren die haar vrijheid belemmeren. 'Ze houdt niet van gitaar', wordt zelfs geopperd. Het tegendeel is echter waar. Ze speelt lang uitgesponnen soli, combineert listige maatsoorten en melodieën met noise en trashrock. Op unieke wijze gebruikt ze alle bestaande effectenapparatuur, met als resultaat een geweldig scala aan riffs, melodieën en rauwe akkoorden. En met op de achtergrond steeds een vage maar aangename folkachtige toon. Halvorson is een sudoku. Alles komt perfect uit, in de juiste vakjes. Maar tegelijk is het verschrikkelijk lastig om te vatten hoe ze dat doet. De onstuimige Ches Smith - onder meer in Ribots 'Ceramic Dog' - is uit hetzelfde hout gesneden: een eigenzinnig en origineel slagwerkgenie. Met warme en sterk swingende baslijnen smeedt John Hébert de muzikaal extreme escapades van de collega's tot een monument van gebalanceerde contrasten. Is de tijd rijp om Halvorsons torso op het Mount Rushmore van de gitaar te plaatsen, naast die van andere illustere gitaristen: Bailey-Frith-Ribot-Otomo? Français : Mary Halvorson est au sommet de son art en tant que guitariste, compositrice et improvisatrice. Elle n'aime pas les structures qui brident sa liberté ; certains prétendent même ' qu'elle n'aime pas la guitare '. Mais il n'en est rien, bien au contraire. Elle joue des solos qu'elle fait durer, combine d'astucieux types de mesures et mélodies avec du noise et du trash rock. Comme personne, elle sait exploiter tous les générateurs d'effets pour produire une formidable gamme de riffs, mélodies et accords bruts. En toile de fond pointe toujours vaguement un agréable ton folk. Halvorson est comme un sudoku : tout colle parfaitement, chaque chose est à sa place. Mais en même temps, il est terriblement difficile de comprendre comment elle parvient à ce résultat. L'impétueux Ches Smith - il démontre entre autres son tempérament dans ' Ceramic Dog ' de Ribot - est de la même trempe ; c'est un percussionniste génial et hautement original. John Hébert produit des lignes de basse chaleureuses qui swinguent pour fondre les escapades extrêmes de ses collègues dans un monument de contrastes équilibrés. Le moment serait-il venu d'ajouter l'effigie de Mary Halvorson au Mount Rushmore de la guitare, à côté de celles d'autres illustres guitaristes comme Bailey-Frith-Ribot-Otomo ? English: As a guitarist, composer and improviser, Mary Halvorson is first among equals. She doesn't like structures, as these hinder her freedom. It's even said that she's not keen on the guitar, though the opposite is true. She plays long, spun-out solos and combines artful time signatures and melodies with noise and trash rock. Moreover, she has a unique way of using all the available effect devices, which results in a terrific range of riffs, melodies and raw chords. All the while in the background is a vague, but agreeable, folk-like tone. Halvorson's playing is like a sudoku puzzle, with everything falling perfectly into the right boxes, albeit it's not at all easy to work out how she does it. The turbulent Ches Smith - heard in Ribot's 'Ceramic Dog', among others - is hewn from the same wood: a wilful and original genius of percussion. With his warm and super-swinging bass lines, John Hébert forges his colleagues' musically extreme escapades into a monument of balanced contrasts. It may be time to add a bust of Halvorson to the Mount Rushmore of the guitar, next to those of such other illustrious guitarists as Bailey, Frith, Ribot and Otomo. |
