Summary[edit]

Description

Infantry combat scene in Bougainville, France (SC 189099-S), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: "The 'Yanks' [American soldiers] mop up on Bougainville. At night on Bougainville the 'Japs' [Japanese soldiers] would infiltrate American lines. At dawn, the doughboys went out and killed them. Even during the mopping-up process, the 'Japs' [Japanese soldiers] persisted, for a while. This photo beautiful technically, but grim in import, shows a tank going forward, infantrymen following in its cover. Note [one] soldier getting out of the foxhole at right; another (center) crawling; the man in the foreground in the act of firing. Note, too, the soldier nearest the tank running to another position. The tank covers him directly from enemy fire in front."
