Cooke allowed them to retain ten gunsfor the one hundred and seven men present, com-pelled to travel at least four hundred miles througha hostile Indian country, without a human haliita-tion; but their situation was not so desperate ashe intended, for a majority of the men, before itwas too late, buried their rifles and double-barreledshot-guns in the friendly sand mounds, and meeklysurrendered to Cooke the short escopetas they hadcaptured from the Mexicans. Cooke immediatelyre-crossed the liver and slept. He awakened to apartial realization of his harsh and unfeeling act;and sent a message to Snively that he would escortas many of his men as would accept the invitationinto Independence, Missouri. Pease, a noted hardware merchant ofSt. Louis, and an old friend of the writer, whobitterly denounced Cooke and defended the causeof the Texians on reaching St. Louis. Col. Snivel5 hastily dispatched a courier advisingCapt. Chandler of these events and asking him tohalt. He did so and on the 2d of July the twoparties re-united. On the 4th the Indians stam-peded sixty of their horses, but in the fight losttwelve warriors, while one Texian was killed andone wounded. On the 6th the scouts reported that the caravanhad crossed the Arkansas. Some wanted to pursueand attack it — others opposed. Snively resignedon the 9th. Sixty-five men selected Chas. A.
