| Description |
English: From the museums plate: Executioner's Sword. Indian, Oudh, early 19th century. This massive sword, decorated with the engraved and inlaid arms of the ruler of Oudh, weights 30.4 kg. It would be carried before the ruler in ceremonies. In 1819, the then ruler Nawab Ghazi-ud-din Hadar was encouraged by the East India Company to assume the title of King and objects such as this were prepared as part of his panoply. Purchased 1860
Deutsch: Indisches Richtschwert. Das Schwert hat eine schwere, gebogene, einschneidige Klinge. Die Klinge wird vom Heft zum Ort breiter und läuft gebogen zum Ort. Auf dem Klingenrücken ist eine Klingenverbreiterung ausgeschmiedet (Jelman). Das Heft besteht aus Holz, hat ein kleines, rundes Parier und einen kugelförmigen Knauf. |
