Summary[edit]

Description
English: Incline. View NW down the incline which was the original Whitby - Pickering Railway, built by George Stephenson and opened in 1836. The incline runs between Beck Hole and Goathland and was found to be too steep for horses to pull carriages up and also for the early locomotives. In 1865 an alternative route was found after a cable system for hauling carriages was found to be unsatisfactory. The route now is used by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
