All their beds are furnishedwith these appendages, without which, it would beimpossible to sleep, on account of the number and viru-lence of these venomous insects. The third mate sleptin the hammock, a universal article of furniture in everyhouse, consistins: of a broad net work of reeds gatheredtogether at the two ends by cords with which it is sus-pended to rafters overhead. In this, the Spanish ladiesare to be seen lolling for the greater part of the time,vibrating backwards and forwards. Thus we passed thenight, roused from our slumbers every few minutes bythe sting of musquitoes, the howling of dogs, and thebraying of the donkey underneath us in reply to the sal-utations of other donkeys. THE ALCALDE. 169 At the first appearance of daylight, we were on themove, and after hunting up the boats crew, we hurrieddown to the beach, stopping frequently to listen to thesavage cries of the wild beasts in the dense woods uponthe opposite side of the river. The equatorial regionsof South America are infested with many varieties ofbeasts of prey, the most terrible of which is a species ofpanther, called the South American Lion, foundin great abundance in this neighborhood. We launch-ed our boat into the surf after dragging her for thirty orforty yards over the sand beach, and were soon along-side the ship. A few hours afterwards, I went ashore with the lar*board watch to spend the day.
